Man has received much from God, but one of the more extraordinary gifts that we have been given is outlined in Ephesians 4:11-12; it states, “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints…” God has given us preachers, but not just preachers but preachers that give us the word of God. In 1 Corinthians 1:18-21, we are shown that God has chosen the foolishness of preaching to save the lost. As much as man needs a traffic light to direct him on the roadways, man needs Godly preaching to lead us on the roadways to Heaven.
Godly preaching is always backed up by power. In 1 Corinthians 2:4, Paul said, “and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” In short, what the Apostle was telling us is that the preaching of the word of God is more than mere words but; it is power or conviction. The power in preaching is, in part, the conviction that God brings us by the message that is being shared. Often times it is as was said in the book of Romans 10:15 when we hear the word of God and conviction strikes our heart, it is there that now prayer can be made; we have heard how our ways offended God. Conviction leads us to move our hearts closer to God.
Had it not been for the preaching and the conviction that came our way, desire would have never propelled us closer to God. God said in Isaiah 1:18 for man to come and reason with him. The power of preaching is the propellent that uses conviction to bring us to the reasoning with God. We see ourselves in the preaching and are confronted with a desire to change.
